Danco and Prospect Point - Cleaning Up Antarctica

In March of 2004 a shore party of 12 demolished and removed the hut, coal dump and other remains of Base O at Danco Island, leaving only the concrete steps with a plaque attached. Many food stores and other items of interest from Base O were retained for their historic interest and sent for display at Port Lockroy (now managed by the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust) or Stanley Museum, or for retention in the BAS archives.

In just three days a similar abandoned base at Prospect Point was removed in April, using RRS Ernest Shackleton in close support and assistance from returning Rothera winterers. Base J included a frozen rubbish dump which had to be removed using pick axes.
