News Story - Chance to own Antarctic vehicles

Date: 19 Jun 2008

Snow-mobiles are extensively used at the BAS stations and at remote field locations. These small vehicles are used for personal transport and for towing Nansen sledges. BAS operates Bombardier Ski-doos which are simple to ride with just a twist grip throttle and a brake. They have a fully automatic transmission and a track underneath with skis at the front to steer. Ski-doos can attain speeds of up to 50 mph on smooth snow.Tractors, snowmobiles and other vehicles that have seen active service in one of the most remote places on earth go on sale this week. They've been used to support British Antarctic Survey's science facilities at Halley and Rothera research stations. They are available to purchase through competitive tender. Find out more
