Black-browed Albatross (Thalassarche melanophrys) in flight at Bird IslandThe Biological Investigations on Marine Antarctic Systems and Stocks (BIOMASS) cruises were formulated in 1976 with the aim of improving the understanding of the ecology of the Southern Ocean. This work was intended to provide an adequate body of knowledge to manage the living resources in the Southern Ocean.

BIOMASS was composed of 3 field experiments carried out between 1980 and 1985. These were the First International BIOMASS Experiment (FIBEX) which ran from November 1980 to April 1981; The Second International BIOMASS Experiment (SIBEX) part 1, running from October 1983 to May 1984 and part 2, running from November 1984 to April 1985.

The aim of the FIBEX was to carry out a quasi-synoptic survey over a wide area of the South Atlantic, Indian and Pacific sectors of the Southern Ocean. SIBEX 1 and 2 were designed to produce a temporal sequence of observations focused on the much smaller areas of the Bransfield Strait and Prydz Bay regions.

Despite their importance data from the BIOMASS cruises was not readily available prior to a data rescue project which allowed compilation of the data contained in the current database. These data were compiled into a relational database from a series of flat data files producing during the lifetime of the BIOMASS project.

Description of dataset

The BIOMASS dataset contains all data originally held and produced by the Original BIOMASS Data Centre which was established at the British Antarctic Survey, Cambridge in 1985. These include data on oceanographic surveys, net catches, bioacoustic surveys and bird observations which were collected during the BIOMASS programme.
