Announcement of PhD grant in Polar Sciences for vegetation and permafrost studies in Antarctica
Duration: 3 years PhD in Polar Sciences Work location: University of Ferrara, Italy and, partially, at Milano and Varese University (Italy). India announces new IPY outreach activities
The National Centre for Antarctic & Ocean Research (NCAOR), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India & WWF-India organised a public lecture at National Centre for Antarctic & Ocean Research (NCAOR), Goa & Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi on March 1 2007 to celebrate the launch of IPY. Extended deadline for 2nd International Neumayer-Symposium on Polar Research
On March the 22nd, at the University of Alaska Anchorage, there will be an IPY launch and presentation of results from IPY project "Survey of Living Conditions in the Arctic (SLiCA)". SLiCA is an endorsed IPY project (# 386) and presenting results from SLiCA has been seen as an opportunity to focus both on the peoples of the Arctic and Northern communities and the start of the International Polar Year. This is the first release of results from SLiCA comparing living conditions among the Inuit in Northern Alaska (the Inupiat settlement region), the four Inuit Settlement regions in Canada and Greenland as well as the indigenous peoples of Chukotka, Russia. Bulgaria announces IPY National Committee
An IPY National Committee for Bulgaria was established on September 1st 2006. This Committee is chaired by Prof. Dr. Christo Pimpirev and other members include Prof. Dr. Boyan Biolchev, Dr. Nikola Petkov, Assoc. Prof. Nesho Chipev, Assoc. Prof. Dimo Dimov, Assoc. Prof . Rosica Kenderova and Dipl. geol. Gergana Lapteva. The Bulgarian IPY Committee launched the celebration of IPY with a written statement/declaration which was accepted by the Bulgarian Parliament on 21st February 2007. Edinburgh Antarctic Declaration on the International Polar Year 2007-2008 (19/06/06)
In its Edinburgh Declaration on the International Polar Year 2007-2008, the Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting said: “We, the Antarctic Treaty Parties, express our support for a successful International Polar Year. We believe that the scientific research undertaken during the International Polar Year will increase knowledge of the Antarctic and will yield a better understanding of the major terrestrial, ocean and atmospheric systems that control the planet. The polar regions are sensitive barometers of climate change, and we value their biodiversity. The following two postdoctoral fellowships are available on International Polar Year 2007-2008 projects led by the Environment and Natural Resources Institute at University of Alaska Anchorage: Soil Ecology, Soil Biogeochemistry The incumbent will conduct and supervise experimental work elucidating the consequences of deeper snow, shrub increases, and effects on soil-plant dynamics.
