We in the IPY International Programme Office join the Antarctic science community in mourning the death of our dear friend Edith Fanta.
Dr Fanta served as a leading member of the Brazilian scientific community. She dedicated her life to the study and protection of Antarctic marine resources. Within the IPY Joint Committee she spoke strongly for the important roles of women and youth in polar science and for the importance of IPY as an event to communicate polar science to the global public.
We remember with admiration her enthusiasm for IPY and her joyful approach to Antarctic research.

I am so sorry to learn about the loss of Dr. Edith Fanta. I had the chance to meet her and to listen to her presentations. She was a great scientist and a very kind person. My condolences to her family. Lucia
