The UK Polar Network (UKPN), British branch of the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS) organizes a series of workshops for early career scientists. The 2nd workshop will take place in Plymouth, UK, 12-13 October 2009. It will focus on Arctic Marine Sciences and is aimed at young researchers at various career stages (from undergraduate to early faculty) who are going to be mentored by experienced researchers in the field.
Registration for the workshop is free and includes lunch refreshments, a networking cruise to Plymouth Sound and a reception at Plymouth Marine Laboratory. Early career scientists from all countries are eligible to apply. Limited travel funds are also available. To register and express your interest in the workshop, please fill out the webform at http://www.polarnetwork.org/machform/view.php?id=15 by 15 September 2009.
We are pleased that Plymouth Marine Laboratory will host this event and CEO Prof. Stephen de Mora will open the workshop with a welcome address. Other confirmed mentors so far are Dr. Cynan Ellis-Evans (UK Arctic Office), Dr. Finlo Cottier from the Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS) and Dr. Warwick Vincent (University Laval, Quebec, Canada), an expert in Arctic microbial ecology, who will provide a Canadian perspective of Arctic Marine Science. Other scientific sessions are still being planned, and there will be a discussion on national and international collaborations, facilities and logistics, as well as break-out sessions on career skills and communication and outreach. Participants are also encouraged to suggest sessions and get involved as chairs.
