International Polar Year (IPY), which extends from March 2007 through to March 2009, is a worldwide initiative involving thousands of scientists from over 60 countries and focuses on both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. Although it is called ‘Polar Year’ it is held over two years in order to have full and equal coverage of both Polar Regions and covers two full annual cycles.
The aim of IPY is to educate the public about the Polar Regions and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers. During IPY there will be over 170 scientific projects being undertaken and numerous events aimed at raising the profile of these fragile areas.
