YAWA & IPY DAY
60 children, age between 4 -17 years old and 20 adults are attending the annual event of YAWA Ramadhan Camp, at Agro Tech Resort, Ulu Langat. The theme of this years event is; "Be a GREEN MUSLIM".
Since this camp falls on IPY Day, the camp coordinators are taking the opportunity to introduce IPY to these children from a diversified background, to understand IPY and the theme, SEA ICE. A demonstration on the experiment of ice cubes will be one of the activities at this camp. Pictures will be sent to IPY Global Community Initiative after the camp.
YAWA is an environmental education organization that is dedicated to changing young lives. More than 5000 children have participated in its activities since its establishment 19 years ago. The environmental programmes are initiated by young people for young people (www.yawa.org) . It is a partner with UNEP Tunza projects and it supports the UNEP One Billion Tree Planting Campaign.
Over 70 trees were planted at the UNEP Tunza International Children's Conference help in Putrajaya in 2006 (www.yawa.org/tunza) . This year, YAWA has planted 3120 trees and Mangrove plants through its project "Keep Planting Trees" with the support of the Forestry Malaysia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia. This is our initiative, a Malaysian initiative to curb global warming - more trees we plant, we get more oxygen and more carbon dioxide will be absorbed.

Trees planted this year will last more than hundred years. If every year we plant one billion trees, they will absorb surplus carbon dioxyde generated by human activity. When the trees die, they do not only release methane and carbon dioxide but also produce humus that enriches soil to grow more trees. We have to set a balance in generation of methane and carbon dioxide and its fixation by trees. Respect and good luck!
