September 21st, 2007, marked the first International Polar day... this time with the focus on Sea Ice. It was a great opportunity to involve both the scientific community, and the public around the world.
Within a week of asking, a request to the IPY community resulted in translations of the flyer into eighteen languages:
English 中文 Nederlands Suomeksi Francais Português Svenska 日本語 Deutsch Inuktitut Русский Danish Icelandic Malay Polski Espanol Norwegian Afrikaans
Scientists from over 30 IPY projects involved with Sea Ice also sent images and text, and said they were happy to be contacted by the public. We hope that future IPY Days will involve increased interaction with IPY scientists through tools such as videoconferencing. These ideas were tested on September 18th by a live videoconference connecting participants with ships in the Arctic and the Antarctic.
Over 120 different schools and institutions participated via the Tagzania virtual balloon tool. They can all be viewed on the map, or you can read details about the participants, including photos and websites, in this virtual balloon list.
Check out the ones that have a little attachment attached to the entry, and the ones that uploaded a photo.
In Malaysia, 60 children, age between 4 -17 years old and 20 adults are currently attending the annual event of YAWA Ramadhan Camp, at Agro Tech Resort, Ulu Langat. The theme of this years event is ‘Be a GREEN MUSLIM’. Since this camp fell on IPY Day, the camp coordinators took the opportunity to introduce IPY at this event.
Khadijah Abdul Rahman-Sinclair just sent me an email from the camp with an update:
The camp was great! 70 people participated including 30 children from underprivileged backgrounds..
We did the ice experiment - the result, we found the ice in salt water took longer to melt than the ice in freshwater... we did it on the reverse, since we did not have refrigerator to make the blue ice. Instead, we coloured the fresh water and salt water and drop in the ice cubes we bought. We will do the experiment again!
We are going to follow up the study on Sea Ice, to understand why this is so and how does it affect the polar region and us! Photos will be sent later, however, here is the Ramadhan Camp group.
Future IPY Days will occur approximately every three months and focus on topics including Ice Sheets and Exploration, Arctic Communities and Human Health, and Polar Oceans.
